OLD YEAR HOUSES

The walls
are weeping
purple tears
The clock
Is flying
overtime
Every other
door hangs off
one hinge
Stairs
have earth
atop their
landings
Both
bathrooms are
in dreadful
states
The half-bath
not so
much
The family
room’s gone
rogue and
now lags
behind
The parlor
where games
of chance
were once
bet upon
A sooty fire pit
resides below
the nursery
and
The closet;
just the one
nearest
the backdoor
Has threatened
to make
a citizen’s
arrest
For a crime
of trouble
yet
to happen
But that
requires
at least
a scintilla
of luck
Old year
houses
are not
known for
having such
But
they
can
always
dream

  1. Enjoyed this, Sharon! Houses really do tell stories...

  2. When I was a child, I liked to explore old, abandoned houses, even though to do so was forbidden. As an adult, abandoned houses still attract me. They do, as Laurie Kolp says, have stories to tell.

  6. Thank you to all who read and commented - I'm sorry I didn't get back here earlier to realize you'd been by ... even so, it's most appreciated! And to The Purple, I have checked out your Haiku blog and am mightily impressed - will hopefully attempt a couple over the holiday - thanks for the invite.
