RIDING THE RAILS ITALIANO

The train to Ancona
follows track tacked close
beside the gusting Adriatic.
There are days the wind
is fierce enough
passengers pray
the whole way
to keep the cars
on the rails
and from flying
to pieces
and out to sea.

The bitter cries
of gulls are swept away
as they fight futilely
to fly south
while the train
continues
to plough north,
gobbling the track
that springs ahead,
ignoring sea-foam filters
obscuring the way.

  1. I want to be on that train! I could almost hear the wheels turning and the wind and the gulls.

  2. What an exhilarating ride, first thing in the morning with my cup of steaming coffee. I was swept away on this one.

  4. I can hear the train (literally) making its way to its destination. Great use of the words, good descriptive details.
