that canopy Virunga, embrace stars
that peek through jungle leaves high
in the mountains where I’m from…
I’ve never been there but my Mama’s
told me about the place so often, I can
smell the thick foliage and the dusk of
other apes. She’s also told me how lucky
I am to be here in this zoo where there
are no poachers and no disease either.
Still, the longing for home runs deep
in my blood.
